Inspection Procedure 3: Starts up and dies

COMMENT
In such cases as the above, the cause is usually improper air-fuel mixture. It is possible, though less likely, that the spark plugs are generating sparks but the sparks are weak.

TROUBLESHOOTING HINTS (The most likely causes for this case:)
  • 12V battery failed.
  • Fuel pump system failed.
  • Dirtiness around throttle valve.
  • Fuel injector system failed.
  • Ignition system failed.
  • Poor compression.
  • EGR system failed.
  • Contaminated fuel.
  • ECM failed.

3.STEP 3. Using scan tool (M.U.T.-III SE), read the DTC.
Use scan tool (M.U.T.-III SE) to check and see if a DTC is set in the ECM (Refer to HOW TO READ AND ERASE DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES).
Q: Is any DTC set?
Perform troubleshooting for the set DTC (Refer to DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE CHART).

4.STEP 4. Using scan tool (M.U.T.-III SE), check the data list.
Use scan tool (M.U.T.-III SE) to check the data list (Refer to DATA LIST REFERENCE TABLE).
  • Item number 50: Air Temperature Sensor
  • Item number 60: Coolant (Water) Temperature Sensor
  • Item number 70: Boost Sensor
  • Item number 80: Air flow Sensor
  • Item number A3301: Barometric pressure sensor
Q: Are the check result normal?
Perform the DTC classified check procedure for the sensor that has shown an abnormal data value (Refer to DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE CHART).

5.STEP 5. Using scan tool (M.U.T.-IIISE), perform the actuator test.
Use scan tool (M.U.T.-III SE) to perform the actuator test (Refer to ACTUATOR TEST REFERENCE TABLE).
  • Item number 20: Fuel pump
OK: Operating sound of fuel pump can be heard.
Q: Is the check result normal?
Troubleshoot "Inspection Procedure 12: Fuel Pump System" (Refer to Fuel pump system).

6.STEP 6. Check the throttle body (throttle valve area) for dirtiness.
Q: Is the throttle valve area dirty?
Clean throttle body (Refer to THROTTLE BODY (THROTTLE VALVE AREA) CLEANING ).

7.STEP 7. Check the timing mark on timing chain.
Check that the timing mark on the timing chain is properly aligned (Refer to ENGINE, Engine Mechanical – Camshaft CAMSHAFT REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION) ].
Q: Is the check result normal?
Align the timing marks (Refer to ENGINE, Engine Overhaul – Timing Chain TIMING CHAIN REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION ).

8.STEP 8. Check the fuel pressure.
Fuel pressure measurement (Refer to FUEL PRESSURE TEST ).
Q: Is the check result normal?
Repair it.

9.STEP 9. Check the fuel injector.
Check the number 1 cylinder fuel injector, number 2 cylinder fuel injector, number 3 cylinder fuel injector and number 4 cylinder fuel injector itself (Refer to FUEL INJECTOR CHECK).
Q: Are the check result normal?
Replace the faulty fuel injector (Refer to FUEL INJECTOR REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION).

10.STEP 10. Check the harness between IPDM E/R connector terminal number 66 and number 1 cylinder fuel injector connector terminal number 2, between IPDM E/R connector terminal number 66 and number 2 cylinder fuel injector connector terminal number 2, between IPDM E/R connector terminal number 66 and number 3 cylinder fuel injector connector terminal number 2, and between IPDM E/R connector terminal number 66 and number 4 cylinder fuel injector connector terminal number 2.
Check power supply line for damage.
