DTC P0461-00: Fuel level sensor circuit performance

TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION
  • The fuel level sensor converts the rest of the fuel to a voltage and sends it to the combination meter.
  • The combination meter sends the data regarding the rest of the fuel to the ECM.
  • The ECM checks whether this data is within a specified range.

DESCRIPTIONS OF MONITOR METHODS
Detect malfunction if change of fuel level sensor output voltage is small when sum of fuel injection is large.

MONITOR EXECUTION
Continuous.

MONITOR EXECUTION CONDITIONS (Other monitor and Sensor)
Other Monitor (There is no temporary DTC set in memory for the item monitored below)
  • Not applicable
Sensor (The sensor below is determined to be normal)
  • Not applicable

DTC SET CONDITIONS
Logic Flow Chart
Check Condition, Judgment Criterion
  • When the fuel consumption calculated from the operation time of the injector amounts to 10 liters (2.6 gallons)*, the diversity of the amount of fuel in tank calculated from the fuel level sensor is less than 2 liters (0.5 gallon).
note*: Fuel consumption is equivalent to 20 liters (5.2 gallons) under the following conditions.
  • Fuel tank level is 95 percent or more.

FAIL-SAFE AND BACKUP FUNCTION
None.

OBD-II DRIVE CYCLE PATTERN
Refer to Diagnostic Function, OBD-II Drive Cycle – Pattern 6 OBD- II DRIVE CYCLE.

TROUBLESHOOTING HINTS (The most likely causes for this code to be set are:)
  • Combination meter assembly failed.
  • Fuel level sensor failed.
  • Fuel level sensor circuit harness damage or connector damage.
  • ECM failed.

DIAGNOSIS
Required Special Tools:
  • MB992744: Vehicle communication interface-Lite (V.C.I.-Lite)
  • MB992745: V.C.I.-Lite main harness A
  • MB992747: V.C.I.-Lite USB cable short
  • MB992748: V.C.I.-Lite USB cable long
1.STEP 1. Using scan tool (M.U.T.-III SE), read the other system DTC.
Use scan tool (M.U.T.-III SE) to check and see if a DTC is set in the PHEV-ECU (Refer to ELECTRIC POWER TRAIN, PHEV-ECU – Troubleshooting – Diagnosis Function DIAGNOSTIC FUNCTION).
Q: Is any DTC set in the PHEV-ECU?
Perform troubleshooting of PHEV-ECU system (Refer to ELECTRIC POWER TRAIN, PHEV-ECU – Troubleshooting – Diagnostic Trouble Code Chart DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE CHART).

2.STEP 2. Using scan tool (M.U.T.-III SE), read the DTC.
Use scan tool (M.U.T.-III SE) to check and see if a DTC P0462-00 or P0463-00 is set.
Q: Is DTC P0462-00 or P0463-00 set?
Perform troubleshooting for the fuel tank gauge unit circuit (Refer to DTC. P0462-00: Fuel level sensor circuit low DTC P0462-00: Fuel level sensor circuit low, and Refer to DTC P0463-00: Fuel level sensor circuit high DTC P0463-00: Fuel level sensor circuit high).

3.STEP 3. Check combination meter.
Check that the combination meter works normally.
Q: Is the combination meter works normally?
Perform troubleshooting of combination meter system (Refer to DRIVE INFORMATION & MULTIMEDIA, Meter, Warning Lamp & Indicator – Basic Inspection – Meter, Warning Lamp & Indicator – Diagnosis and Repair Workflow Work flow).

4.STEP 4. Test the OBD-II drive cycle.
After erasing the DTC, carry out test drive with the drive cycle pattern, and recheck the DTC.
(1) Use scan tool (M.U.T.-III SE) to erase the DTC.
(2) Carry out test drive with the drive cycle pattern (Refer to Diagnostic Function, OBD-II Drive Cycle – Pattern 6 OBD- II DRIVE CYCLE).
(3) Use scan tool (M.U.T.-III SE) to recheck the DTC.
Q: Is DTC P0461-00 set?
Replace the fuel tank gauge unit (Refer to ENGINE, Fuel Supply – On-vehicle Service ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (ECM) REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION). Then
Intermittent malfunction (Refer to GENERAL INFORMATION, General Information – How to Use Troubleshooting/Inspection Service Points – How to Cope with Intermittent Malfunctions HOW TO COPE WITH INTERMITTENT MALFUNCTIONS).

5.STEP 5.
The inspection is complete.
