COMMENTS ON TROUBLE SYMPTOM
  • If the drive mode cannot be switched by pushing the drive mode selector, the drive mode selector, the wiring harness wires between the AWD-ECU and the drive mode selector, the wiring harness wire in the ground circuit for the drive mode selector, the AWD-ECU or the combination meter may have a problem.

PROBABLE CAUSES
  • Damaged wiring harness and connectors
  • Malfunction of drive mode selector
  • AWD-ECU malfunction
  • Combination meter malfunction

DIAGNOSIS
STEP 1. Scan tool MB991958 CAN bus diagnostics
Use scan tool MB991958 to diagnose the CAN bus lines.
Is the check result normal?
Go to Step 2.
Repair the CAN bus line (Refer to GROUP 54C - Troubleshooting/CAN Bus Diagnostics Table ). On completion, go to Step 2.

STEP 2. Retest the system.
Does the malfunction occur again?
The trouble can be an intermittent malfunction (Refer to GROUP 00 - How to Use Troubleshooting/How to Cope with Intermittent Malfunctions ).
Go to Step 3.

STEP 3. Scan tool MB991958 actuator test.
Refer to GROUP 54A - Combination Meter, Actuator test .
  • Item No.5: Meter illumination
Is the check result normal?
Go to Step 4.
Replace the combination meter. (Refer to GROUP 54A - Combination Meter ). Then go to Step 8.

STEP 4. Resistance measurement between the drive mode selector connector terminals
(1) Remove the drive mode selector (Refer to ).
(2) Measure the resistance between the terminals (Refer to ).
Is the check result normal?
Go to Step 5.
Replace the drive mode selector (Refer to ). Then go to Step 8.

STEP 5. Wiring harness check
(1) Check the wiring harness between the C-228 AWD-ECU connector (terminals No.14 and 16) and the C-40 drive mode selector connector (terminal No.2).
(2) Check the connector(s) or terminal(s) or wiring harness above for damage or other problem.
Is the check result normal?
Go to Step 6
Repair the connector(s) or terminal(s) or wiring harness.

STEP 6. Resistance measurement at the drive mode selector connector
(1) Disconnect the drive mode selector connector.
(2) Measure the resistance between the drive mode selector wiring harness side connector and the body ground.
OK: Continuity exists (2 Ω or less)
Is the check result normal?
Go to Step 7
Repair the connector(s) or terminal(s) or wiring harness.

STEP 7. Scan tool MB991958 data list.
Check the following data list. (Refer to ).
  • Item No.15: 4WD mode (output)
Is the check result normal?
Go to Step 9
Go to Step 8

STEP 8. Retest the system.
Does the malfunction occur again?
Replace AWD-ECU. Then go to Step 9.
The trouble can be an intermittent malfunction (Refer to GROUP 00 - How to Use Troubleshooting/How to Cope with Intermittent Malfunctions ).

STEP 9. Retest the system.
Does the malfunction occur again?
Troubleshoot the combination meter multi information display (Refer to GROUP 54A - Check procedure for each multi information display screen ). Then diagnose again from Step 1.
This diagnosis is complete.
