DTC P04BF: Fuel Filler Lid Opener Actuator Circuit Open
 
 
 
 
TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION
  • The ECM activates the fuel filler lid actuator by turning the fuel filler lid opener relay ON, and the fuel filler lid opens.
  • The ECM monitors the movement of the fuel filler lid opener actuator rod according to the fuel filler lid opener actuator switch signal.
 
 
DTC SET CONDITIONS
Check Conditions
  • During the refuel control mode.
  • Fuel filler lid opener relay is ON.
  • 12V starter battery positive voltage is between 10 and 16.5 volts.
Judgment Criterion
  • The fuel filler lid opener actuator switch voltage is 0.7 V or less while the fuel filler lid opener relay is ON.
 
 
FAIL-SAFE AND BACKUP FUNCTION
  • "READY TO REFUEL" may not disappear when the driver closes the fuel filler lid. "READY TO REFUEL" disappears after about 30 minutes have elapsed or after driving for about 30 seconds.
  • When storing the DTC, "CLOSE FUEL LID" may display in the combination meter.
 
 
TROUBLESHOOTING HINTS (The most likely causes for this code to be set are:)
  • Fuel filler lid opener actuator failed.
  • Open or shorted fuel filler lid opener actuator circuit, harness damage or connector damage.
  • ECM failed.
noteWhen fuel filler lid is opened by fuel filler lid opener relay ON, the DTC may be set if movement of the fuel filler lid opener actuator or the fuel filler lid is disturbed by hand etc.
noteWhen the refuel control mode cannot be canceled even if fuel filler lid is closed*, it can be canceled the refuel control mode by performing the following operations.
*: The related refuel indication on the combination meter does not disappear, the fuel tank solenoid valve does not turn off, or the power of the ECM does not turn off even if the fuel filler lid is closed.
  • Using scan tool (M.U.T.-IIISE), "Forced Refuel control completion" from Special Function screen is executed.
  • 30 minutes passed after the item execution.
  • Drive the vehicle continuously for about 30 seconds.

 
 
DIAGNOSIS
STEP 1. Using scan tool (M.U.T.-IIISE), check evaporative emission system component test item 9 and 10: Fuel Filler Lid Opener Relay.
cautionTo prevent damage to scan tool (M.U.T.-IIISE), always turn off the power supply mode of the electric motor switch before connecting or disconnecting scan tool (M.U.T.-IIISE).
(1) Connect scan tool (M.U.T.-IIISE). Refer to HOW TO CONNECT THE SCAN TOOL (M.U.T.-IIISE) .
(2) Turn on the power supply mode of the electric motor switch.
(3) Check the following items in the evaporative emission system component test. Refer to Evaporative Emission System Component Test Reference Table .
  1. Item 9: Fuel Filler Door Motor Relay ON
  2. Item 10: Fuel Filler Door Motor Relay OFF
(4) Turn off the power supply mode of the electric motor switch.
Is the fuel filler lid opener actuator operating properly?
Go to Step 10.
Go to Step 2.
 
STEP 2. Check the fuel filler lid opener actuator.
Refer to GROUP 42A, Fuel Filler Lid - Fuel Filler Lid Inspection .
Are there any abnormalities?
Replace the fuel filler lid opener actuator. Then go to Step 13.
Go to Step 3.
 
STEP 3. Check the fuel filler lid opener relay.
Refer to GROUP 42A, Fuel Filler Lid - On-vehicle Service - Fuel Filler Lid Opener Relay Check .
Is the measured resistance normal?
Go to Step 4.
Replace the fuel filler lid opener relay. Then go to Step 13.
 
STEP 4. Check of short to ground, open circuit and harness damage in FFMR line between ECM connector and fuel filler lid opener relay connector.
Is the harness wire in good condition?
Go to Step 5.
Repair the connector(s) or wiring harness. Then go to Step 13.
 
STEP 5. Check of open circuit and harness damage in ground line between fuel filler lid opener relay connector and ground.
Is the harness wire in good condition?
Go to Step 6.
Repair the connector(s) or wiring harness. Then go to Step 13.
 
STEP 6. Check of short to ground, open circuit and harness damage in power supply line between MFI relay connector and fuel filler lid opener relay connector.
Is the harness wire in good condition?
Go to Step 7.
Repair the connector(s) or wiring harness. Then go to Step 13.
 
STEP 7. Check of short to ground, open circuit and harness damage in power supply line between fuel filler lid opener relay connector and fuel filler lid opener actuator connector.
Is the harness wire in good condition?
Go to Step 8.
Repair the connector(s) or wiring harness. Then go to Step 13.
 
STEP 8. Check of open circuit and harness damage in ground line between fuel filler lid opener actuator connector and ground.
Is the harness wire in good condition?
Go to Step 9.
Repair the connector(s) or wiring harness. Then go to Step 13.
 
STEP 9. Using scan tool (M.U.T.-IIISE), check evaporative emission system component test item 9 and 10: Fuel Filler Lid Opener Relay.
(1) Turn on the power supply mode of the electric motor switch.
(2) Check the following items in the evaporative emission system component test. Refer to Evaporative Emission System Component Test Reference Table .
  1. Item 9: Fuel Filler Door Motor Relay ON
  2. Item 10: Fuel Filler Door Motor Relay OFF
(3) Turn off the power supply mode of the electric motor switch.
Is the fuel filler lid opener actuator operating properly?
It can be assumed that this malfunction is intermittent. Refer to GROUP 00, How to Use Troubleshooting/Inspection Service Points - How to Cope with Intermittent Malfunctions .
Replace the ECM (Refer to Removal and Installation ). Then go to Step 13.
 
STEP 10. Check of harness damage in FFDO line between fuel filler lid opener actuator connector and ECM connector.
Is the harness wire in good condition?
Go to Step 11.
Repair the connector(s) or wiring harness. Then go to Step 13.
 
STEP 11. Check of harness damage in power supply line between 12V starter battery and fuel filler lid opener actuator connector.
Is the harness wire in good condition?
Go to Step 12.
Repair the connector(s) or wiring harness. Then go to Step 13.
 
STEP 12. Replace the fuel filler lid opener actuator switch (integrated in fuel filler lid opener actuator).
(1) Replace the fuel filler lid opener actuator switch (integrated in fuel filler lid opener actuator).
(2) Turn on the power supply mode of the electric motor switch and delete the DTC.
(3) Press the fuel filler lid opener switch.
(4) Read the DTC again.
(5) Turn off the power supply mode of the electric motor switch.
Is DTC P04BF set?
Replace the ECM (Refer to Removal and Installation ). Then go to Step 13.
The inspection is complete.
 
STEP 13. Using scan tool (M.U.T.-IIISE), read the diagnostic trouble code (DTC).
(1) Turn on the power supply mode of the electric motor switch and delete the DTC.
(2) Press the fuel filler lid opener switch.
(3) Read the DTC again.
(4) Turn off the power supply mode of the electric motor switch.
Is DTC P04BF set?
Retry the troubleshooting.
The inspection is complete.
