DTC P0016-00: Crankshaft/camshaft (intake) Position Sensor Phase Problem

TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION
The ECM checks the variable valve timing system for malfunction.

DESCRIPTIONS OF MONITOR METHODS
The open timing of the intake valve is faster or slower than the specified value.

MONITOR EXECUTION
Continuous.

MONITOR EXECUTION CONDITIONS (Other monitor and Sensor)
Other Monitor (There is no temporary DTC set in memory for the item monitored below)
  • Not applicable
Sensor (The sensor below is determined to be normal)
  • Camshaft position sensor
  • Crankshaft position sensor
  • Engine coolant temperature sensor
  • Throttle position sensor
  • Oil feeder control valve

DTC SET CONDITIONS
Logic Flow Chart
Check Conditions
  • Engine speed is between 594 r/min and 1,500 r/min.
  • Engine coolant temperature is between 20°C (68°F) and 88°C (190°F).
  • Oil feeder control valve is OFF.
  • 1 second has elapsed after the above mentioned conditions have been met.
Judgment Criterion
  • The open timing of the intake valve is faster than –1.2°CA (ATDC) for 10 seconds.
    or
  • The open timing of the intake valve is slower than 16.6°CA (ATDC) for 10 seconds.

FAIL-SAFE AND BACKUP FUNCTION
None.

OBD-II DRIVE CYCLE PATTERN
Refer to Diagnostic Function, OBD-II Drive Cycle – Pattern 2 OBD- II DRIVE CYCLE.

TROUBLESHOOTING HINTS (The most likely causes for this code to be set are:)
  • Timing chain in out of place.
  • Loose timing chain.
  • Intake V.V.T. sprocket tooth coming off.
  • ECM failed.

DIAGNOSIS
Required Special Tools:
  • MB992744: Vehicle communication interface-Lite (V.C.I.-Lite)
  • MB992745: V.C.I.-Lite main harness A
  • MB992747: V.C.I.-Lite USB cable short
  • MB992748: V.C.I.-Lite USB cable long
1.STEP 1. Using scan tool (M.U.T.-III SE), read the DTC.
Use scan tool (M.U.T.-III SE) to check and see if a DTC P0335-00 or DTC P0340-00 is set.
Q: Is DTC P0335-00 or DTC P0340-00 set?
Perform troubleshooting for the set DTC (Refer to DTC P0335-00: Crank Angle Sensor system DTC P0335-00: Crank Angle Sensor system, and refer to P0340-00: Camshaft Position Sensor system DTC P0340-00: Camshaft Position Sensor system). Then .

2.STEP 2. Check timing mark on the timing chain.
Q: Is timing chain in out of place?
Repair it. Then initialize the learning value for the elongation of the timing chain (Refer to TIMING CHAIN LEARNED VALUE RESET). Then

3.STEP 3. Check the timing chain and the intake V.V.T. sprocket.
Check the following items, and repair or replace the defective items.
  • Check the timing chain loose.
  • Check the intake V.V.T. sprocket tooth coming off.
Q: Are the timing chain and the intake V.V.T. sprocket in good condition?
Repair or replace it. Then initialize the learning value for the elongation of the timing chain (Refer to TIMING CHAIN LEARNED VALUE RESET). Then

4.STEP 4. Test the OBD-II drive cycle.
After erasing the DTC, carry out test drive with the drive cycle pattern, and recheck the DTC.
(1) Use scan tool (M.U.T.-III SE) to erase the DTC.
(2) Carry out test drive with the drive cycle pattern (Refer to Diagnostic Function, OBD-II Drive Cycle – Pattern 2 OBD- II DRIVE CYCLE).
(3) Use scan tool (M.U.T.-III SE) to recheck the DTC.
Q: Is DTC P0016-00 set?
Intermittent malfunction (Refer to GENERAL INFORMATION, General Information – How to Use Troubleshooting/Inspection Service Points – How to Cope with Intermittent Malfunctions HOW TO COPE WITH INTERMITTENT MALFUNCTIONS).

5.STEP 5.
Retry the troubleshooting.
The inspection is complete.
