DTC U0141 ETACS CAN timeout

caution
  • If DTC U0141 is set, be sure to diagnose the CAN bus line.
  • When replacing the ECU, always check that the communication circuit is normal.
  • When the ETACS-ECU of vehicles without KOS is replaced, the encrypted code of the ignition key needs to be registered to the ETACS-ECU. (If the encrypted code is not registered, the engine cannot be started. Register the encrypted code as described in Immobilizer System - How to Register Key ID .)

TROUBLE JUDGMENT
If the signal from ETACS-ECU cannot be received, the gateway-ECU (for BSW) sets DTC U0141.

JUDGMENT CRITERIA
With the ignition switch is at "ON" position, DTC U1190 is not set, if the communication with ETACS-ECU cannot be established for 2,500 ms or more, the gateway-ECU (for BSW) determines that a problem has occurred.

TROUBLESHOOTING HINTS
  • Malfunction of CAN bus line
  • Malfunction of the gateway-ECU (for BSW)
  • Malfunction of the ETACS-ECU

DIAGNOSIS
STEP 1. Using scan tool (M.U.T.-IIISE), diagnose the CAN bus line.
(1)
cautionTo prevent damage to scan tool (M.U.T.-IIISE), always turn the ignition switch to the "LOCK" (OFF) position before connecting or disconnecting scan tool (M.U.T.-IIISE).
Connect scan tool (M.U.T.-IIISE). Refer to "How to connect the scan tool (M.U.T.-IIISE) ."
(2) Turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position.
(3) Diagnose the CAN bus line.
(4) Turn the ignition switch to the "LOCK" (OFF) position.
Is the CAN bus line found to be normal?
Go to Step 2.
Repair the CAN bus line (Refer to ).

STEP 2. Using scan tool (M.U.T.-IIISE), read the EPS-ECU diagnostic trouble code.
Check whether an ETACS "time-out" related DTC is set in other ECUs (Refer to ).
Is the diagnostic trouble code set?
Go to Step 3.
Go to Step 4.

STEP 3. Check whether the diagnostic trouble code is set again.
Recheck if the DTC is set.
(1) Erase the DTC.
(2) Turn the ignition switch from "LOCK" (OFF) position to "ON" position.
(3) On completion, check that the DTC is not set again.
Is the DTC set?
Replace ETACS-ECU (Refer to GROUP 54A - ETACS ).
A poor connection, open circuit or other intermittent malfunction is present in the CAN bus lines between the ETACS-ECU and the gateway-ECU (for BSW) (Refer to GROUP 00 - How to Use Troubleshooting/Inspection Service Points ).

STEP 4.
Replace gateway-ECU (for BSW) (Refer to ).
A poor connection, open circuit or other intermittent malfunction is present in the CAN bus lines between the ETACS-ECU and the gateway-ECU (for BSW) (Refer to GROUP 00 - How to Use Troubleshooting/Inspection Service Points ).
