DTC P0045: Turbocharger Wastegate Actuator Control Motor Circuit High

CIRCUIT OPERATION
Controls the current that is applied from the ECM connector terminals WGM+, WGM- to the turbocharger wastegate actuator.

TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION
ECM varies the direction and the amperage of the current that is applied to the turbocharger wastegate actuator control motor in order to control the opening of the turbocharger wastegate regulating valve.

DESCRIPTIONS OF MONITOR METHODS
  • The ECM detects short circuit malfunction.

MONITOR EXECUTION
  • Continuous

MONITOR EXECUTION CONDITIONS (Other monitor and Sensor)
Other Monitor (There is no temporary DTC set in memory for the item monitored below)
  • Not applicable
Sensor (The sensor below is determined to be normal)
  • Not applicable

DTC SET CONDITIONS
Logic Flow Chart
Check Conditions
  • More than 2 seconds have passed since the engine starting sequence was completed.
  • Battery positive voltage is more than 9 volts.
Judgment Criterion
  • A malfunction by ground fault occurred for 2 seconds or a malfunction by short circuit occurred for 2 seconds.

FAIL-SAFE AND BACKUP FUNCTION
  • Stop driving the turbocharger wastegate actuator control motor.
  • Torque is restricted.

OBD-II DRIVE CYCLE PATTERN
  • Refer to Diagnostic Function - OBD-II Drive Cycle - Pattern 1 .

TROUBLESHOOTING HINTS (The most likely causes for this code to be set are: )
  • Turbocharger wastegate actuator failed.
  • Open or shorted turbocharger wastegate actuator control motor circuit, harness damage or connector damage.
  • ECM failed.

DIAGNOSIS
STEP 1. Check the continuity at ECM harness side connector.
(1) Disconnect the ECM connector and measure at the harness side.
(2) Measure the continuity between terminal WGMG and ground.
  • Continuity (2 ohms or less)
Does continuity exist?
Go to Step 2.
Repair or replace the connector(s), or check and repair the harness of open circuit and damage in WGMG line between ECM connector and ground. Then go to Step 7.

STEP 2. Check of open circuit, short circuit and harness damage in WGM+ line between turbocharger wastegate actuator connector and ECM connector.
Is the harness wire in good condition?
Go to Step 3.
Repair the connector(s) or wiring harness. Then go to Step 7.

STEP 3. Check of open circuit, short circuit and harness damage in WGM- line between turbocharger wastegate actuator connector and ECM connector.
Is the harness wire in good condition?
Go to Step 4.
Repair the connector(s) or wiring harness. Then go to Step 7.

STEP 4. Check the turbocharger wastegate actuator.
Refer to GROUP 15, On-vehicle Service - Turbocharger Waste Gate Actuator Check .
Is the measured resistance normal?
Go to Step 5.
Replace the turbocharger assembly. Then go to Step 7.

STEP 5. Check the trouble symptoms.
(1) Carry out a test drive with the drive cycle pattern. Refer to Diagnostic Function - OBD-II Drive Cycle - Pattern 1 .
(2) Check the diagnostic trouble code (DTC).
Is DTC P0045 set?
Go to Step 6.
It can be assumed that this malfunction is intermittent. Refer to GROUP 00, How to Use Troubleshooting/Inspection Service Points - How to Cope with Intermittent Malfunctions .

STEP 6. Replace the turbocharger.
(1) Replace the turbocharger.
(2) Carry out a test drive with the drive cycle pattern. Refer to Diagnostic Function - OBD-II Drive Cycle - Pattern 1 .
(3) Check the diagnostic trouble code (DTC).
Is DTC P0045 set?
Replace the ECM (Refer to Removal and Installation ). Then go to Step 7.
The inspection is complete.

STEP 7. Test the OBD-II drive cycle.
(1) Carry out a test drive with the drive cycle pattern. Refer to Diagnostic Function - OBD-II Drive Cycle - Pattern 1 .
(2) Check the diagnostic trouble code (DTC).
Is DTC P0045 set?
Retry the troubleshooting.
The inspection is complete.
