DTC B1161: VIN mismatch

caution
  • When diagnosis trouble code No.B1161 is stored, be sure to diagnose the CAN bus line.
  • When replacing the ECU, always check that the communication circuit is normal.

TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION (COMMENT)
When the VIN registered in OSS-ECU is different from the VIN transmitted by engine control module on the CAN bus line, OSS-ECU stores DTC B1161.

DTC SET CONDITION
Check Conditions
  • When all the following conditions are met.
    1. Power supply mode: ON
    2. VIN written in OSS-ECU
Judgment Criterion
  • The VIN received via CAN communication is different from the VIN written in OSS-ECU.

TROUBLESHOOTING HINTS
  • Malfunction of the CAN bus line
  • Writing error of VIN to engine control module (engine control module has been interchanged between two vehicles, or VIN has not been written after engine control module replacement)
  • Malfunction of OSS-ECU

DIAGNOSIS
STEP 1. Using scan tool (M.U.T-III), diagnose the CAN bus line.
(1)
cautionTo prevent damage to scan tool (M.U.T-III), always turn the power supply mode of the engine switch to the OFF position before connecting or disconnecting scan tool (M.U.T-III).
Connect scan tool (M.U.T-III). Refer to "How to connect scan tool (M.U.T.-III) ."
(2) Turn the power supply mode of the engine switch to ON.
(3) Diagnose the CAN bus line.
(4) Turn the power supply mode of the engine switch to OFF.
Is the CAN bus line found to be normal?
Go to Step 2.
Repair the CAN bus line (Refer to GROUP 54C, Diagnosis ).

STEP 2. Check the VIN registered in the engine control module and the VIN of the vehicle.
Check if the VIN registered in the engine control module matches with the VIN of the vehicle.
(1) On the system selection screen of the scan tool (M.U.T.-III), select "MFI/GDI/Diesel".
(2) Select "Coding."
(3) Select "VIN Information."
(4) Compare with the VIN of the vehicle.
Does the VIN of the engine control module match with the VIN of the vehicle?
Go to Step 3.
Write the VIN to the engine control module. [Refer to GROUP 00 - How to Perform Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) Writing ]. Record VIN and go to Step 3.

STEP 3. Recheck for diagnostic trouble code.
(1) Erase the DTC.
(2) Turn the power supply mode of the engine switch from OFF to ON.
(3) Check if DTC is stored.
(4) Turn the power supply mode of the engine switch from ON to OFF.
Is the DTC stored?
Replace the OSS-ECU and register the VIN (Refer to ).
Intermittent malfunction is suspected (Refer to GROUP 00 - How to Use Troubleshooting/Inspection Service Points - How to Cope with Intermittent Malfunction ).
