Inspection Procedure 3: The selector position light selected by the selector lever does not illuminate normally.

COMMENTS ON TROUBLE SYMPTOM
When the selector position light selected by the selector lever does not illuminate normally, the selector lever or PHEV-ECU is suspected.

TROUBLESHOOTING HINTS
  • Damaged wiring harness and connectors
  • Malfunction of the selector lever
  • Malfunction of the PHEV-ECU

DIAGNOSIS
Required Special Tools:
  • MB991223: Wiring harness set
  • MB992006: Extra fine probe
1.Voltage measurement at selector lever connector (terminal No. 9)
(1) Disconnect the connector, and measure at the wiring harness side.
(2) Change the power supply mode of the electric motor switch to ON (READY indicator: OFF).
(3) Measure the voltage between the selector lever connector (terminal No. 9) and body ground.
OK: Battery voltage
Is the check result normal?
Repair the faulty part.

2.Check of short to ground circuit and open circuit in signal line between PHEV-ECU and selector lever
Check the following lines for short to ground circuit and open circuit.
  • SPLP line <When selector position (P) does not illuminate normally>
  • SPLR line <When selector position (R) does not illuminate normally>
  • SPLN line <When selector position (N) does not illuminate normally>
  • SPLD line <When selector position (D) does not illuminate normally>
  • SPLB line <When selector position (B) does not illuminate normally>
Is the check result normal?
Repair the connector(s) or wiring harness.

3.Selector lever (selector position light) check
Apply the battery voltage to the selector position light of the selector lever, and check whether the light illuminates.
  • Connect the battery positive terminal to the selector lever connector (terminal No. 9), and connect the battery negative terminal to the selector lever connector (SPLP terminal).
  • Connect the battery positive terminal to the selector lever connector (terminal No. 9), and connect the battery negative terminal to the selector lever connector (SPLR terminal).
  • Connect the battery positive terminal to the selector lever connector (terminal No. 9), and connect the battery negative terminal to the selector lever connector (SPLN terminal).
  • Connect the battery positive terminal to the selector lever connector (terminal No. 9), and connect the battery negative terminal to the selector lever connector (SPLD terminal).
  • Connect the battery positive terminal to the selector lever connector (terminal No. 9), and connect the battery negative terminal to the selector lever connector (SPLB terminal).
OK: The corresponding selector position light illuminates when the battery voltage is applied.
Is the check result normal?
Replace the selector lever (Refer to Transaxle - Selector Lever REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION).

4.Retest the system.
Does the trouble symptom persist?
Replace the PHEV-ECU (Refer to PHEV-ECU REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION).
The trouble can be an intermittent malfunction (Refer to General Information - How to Use Troubleshooting/Inspection Service Points, How to Cope with Intermittent Malfunctions HOW TO COPE WITH INTERMITTENT MALFUNCTIONS).
