INSPECTION PROCEDURE 20: Modes display cannot be switched by using the drive mode switch

COMMENTS ON TROUBLE SYMPTOM
If the modes cannot be switched by operating the drive mode switch, the drive mode switch or the PHEV-ECU is suspected.

PROBABLE CAUSES
  • Malfunction of the drive mode switch
  • Damaged harness or connector
  • Malfunction of the PHEV-ECU

DIAGNOSIS
Required Special Tools
  • MB991223: Wiring harness set
  • MB992006: Extra fine probe
STEP 1. Drive mode switch check.
Check the drive mode switch (Refer to ).
Is the check result normal?
Go to Step 2.
Replace the drive mode switch (Refer to GROUP 52A - Front Floor Console Assembly ).

STEP 2. Check of open circuit in the ground line (drive mode switch and the body ground).
(1) Disconnect the drive mode switch connector.
(2) Take the measurements below at the drive mode switch wiring harness side connector.
  • Continuity E terminal between drive mode switch wiring harness side connector and body ground.
OK: Continuity (less than 2 Ω)
Is the check result normal?
Go to Step 3.
Repair the connector or wiring harness.

STEP 3. Check of open and short to ground circuit in the signal line (PHEV-ECU and drive mode switch).
(1) Take the measurements below at the drive mode switch wiring harness side connector.
  • Continuity 4WD+ terminal between PHEV-ECU wiring harness side connector and body ground.
OK: No continuity
  • Continuity 4WD- terminal between PHEV-ECU wiring harness side connector and body ground.
OK: No continuity
  • Continuity (4WD+, +) terminal between PHEV-ECU wiring harness side connector and drive mode switch wiring harness side connector.
OK: Continuity (less than 2 Ω)
  • Continuity (4WD-, -) terminal between PHEV-ECU wiring harness side connector and drive mode switch wiring harness side connector.
OK: Continuity (less than 2 Ω)
Is the check result normal?
Go to Step 4.
Repair the connector or wiring harness.

STEP 4. Using scan tool (M.U.T.-IIISE), check the data list. <PHEV-ECU>
Check the input signals from the drive mode switch (Refer to ).
  • Operate the drive mode switch.
