HOW TO WRITE THE VIN TO WRITE THE ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (ECM), THE KOS-ECU, THE OSS-ECU, THE SRS-ECU, THE ETACS-ECU, THE PHEV-ECU AND THE REMCU
 
 
Write the VIN of each system according to the following procedures.Vin is stored in the engine control module (ECM), the KOS-ECU, the OSS-ECU, the SRS-ECU, the ETACS-ECU, the PHEV-ECU and the REMCU.If the VIN is improperly erased, each system warning light or warning indicator is illuminated, and the diagnostic trouble code is displayed. When the engine control module (ECM), the KOS-ECU, the OSS-ECU, the SRS-ECU, the ETACS-ECU, the PHEV-ECU or the REMCU is replaced, write the VIN according to the following procedures.

 
 
VIN REGISTRATION PROCEDURE FOR ECM
Required Special Tools:
  • MB992744: Vehicle communication interface-Lite (V.C.I.-Lite)

caution
  • Check that diagnostic trouble code No. P062F "Internal Control Module EEPROM Error" is not set. When diagnostic trouble code No. P062F "Internal Control Module EEPROM Error" is set, even if you attempt to write the VIN, it cannot be stored. If this diagnostic trouble code is set, perform troubleshooting and repair a defective component, and then write the VIN to the ECM.
  • While the scan tool (M.U.T.-IIISE) is communicating with the vehicle, the electric motor switch may not be turned off and no normally. Therefore, when you turn off the electric motor switch for that communication, wait for several seconds and then turn on it again (do not turn on it immediately).
Connect the scan tool (M.U.T.-IIISE) to the 16-pin data link connector as follows.
noteFor details on how to use the scan tool (M.U.T.-IIISE), refer to the "M.U.T.-IIISE Owner's manual."
1. The power supply mode of the electric motor switch should be turned off.
2. Start up the personal computer.
3. Connect special tool MB992747/M992748 or special tool MB991827 to special tool MB992744 or special tool MB991824 and the personal computer.
4. Connect special tool MB992745 or special tool MB991910 to special tool MB992744 or special tool MB991824.
5. Connect special tool MB992745 or special tool MB991910 to the data link connector.
noteWhen the special tool MB992745 is connected to the data link connector, the special tool MB992744 indicator light will be illuminated in a green color.
6. Turn the power switch of special tool MB991824 to the "ON" position. <When using the special tool MB991824>
noteWhen special tool MB991824 is energized, special tool MB991824 indicator light will be illuminated in a green color.
7. Start the M.U.T.-IIISE system on the personal computer.
8. Select "MFI" button from the "System Select" screen.
9. On the next screen, select "Coding".
10. On the "Coding menu" screen, select "Chassis No./VIN Writing" screen.
11. Enter the VIN of registering vehicle and push the OK button.
12. "Chassis No./VIN Writing will be start. Are you sure? is displayed." Then press the OK button.
13. When "Completed" is displayed, press the OK button.

VIN writing result is displayed.
15. Select "Chassis number Information" on the "Coding" screen after the VIN writing is completed, and check that the VIN is changed.
 
 
HOW TO WRITE THE VIN TO THE KOS-ECU
Required Special Tools:

caution
  • Check that diagnostic trouble code No. B2416 "ECU internal error" is not set. When diagnostic trouble code No. B2416 "ECU internal error" is set, even if you attempt to write the VIN, it cannot be stored. Therefore, when this diagnostic trouble code is set, perform troubleshooting and repair a defective component, and then write the VIN to the KOS-ECU.
  • While the scan tool (M.U.T.-IIISE) is communicating with the vehicle, the electric motor switch may not be turned off and no normally. Therefore, when you turn off the electric motor switch for that communication, wait for several seconds and then turn on it again (do not turn on it immediately).
Connect the scan tool (M.U.T.-IIISE) to the 16-pin data link connector as follows.
noteFor details on how to use the scan tool (M.U.T.-IIISE), refer to the "M.U.T.-IIISE Owner's manual."
1. The power supply mode of the electric motor switch should be turned off.
2. Start up the personal computer.
3. Connect special tool MB992747/M992748 or special tool MB991827 to special tool MB992744 or special tool MB991824 and the personal computer.
4. Connect special tool MB992745 or special tool MB991910 to special tool MB992744 or special tool MB991824.
5. Connect special tool MB992745 or special tool MB991910 to the data link connector.
noteWhen the special tool MB992745 is connected to the data link connector, the special tool MB992744 indicator light will be illuminated in a green color.
6. Turn the power switch of special tool MB991824 to the "ON" position. <When using the special tool MB991824>
noteWhen special tool MB991824 is energized, special tool MB991824 indicator light will be illuminated in a green color.
7. Start the M.U.T.-IIISE system on the personal computer.
8. Select "F.A.S.T./IMMO/Keyless" on "System selection" screen.
9. On the next screen, select "Coding".
10. On the "Coding" screen, select "Chassis No./VIN Writing."

Enter the VIN of registering vehicle and push the OK button.
12. "Chassis No./VIN Writing will be start. Are you sure? is displayed." Then press the OK button.
13. When "Completed" is displayed, press the OK button.

VIN writing result is displayed.
15. Register the other ID codes. (Refer to the ID registration procedure manual)
 
 
HOW TO WRITE THE VIN TO THE OSS-ECU
Required Special Tools:

caution
  • When KOS-ECU is replaced, all the registrations that need to be performed at KOS-ECU replacement must be completed before the registration of OSS-ECU.
  • Check that diagnostic trouble code No. B1157 "OSS EEPROM error" is not set. When diagnostic trouble code No. B1157 "OSS EEPROM error" is set, even if you attempt to write the VIN, it cannot be stored. Therefore, when this diagnostic trouble code is set, perform troubleshooting and repair a defective component, and then write the VIN to the OSS-ECU.
  • While the scan tool (M.U.T.-IIISE) is communicating with the vehicle, the electric motor switch may not be turned off and no normally. Therefore, when you turn off the electric motor switch for that communication, wait for several seconds and then turn on it again (do not turn on it immediately).
Connect the scan tool (M.U.T.-IIISE) to the 16-pin data link connector as follows.

1. The power supply mode of the electric motor switch should be turned off.
2. Start up the personal computer.
3. Connect special tool MB992747/M992748 or special tool MB991827 to special tool MB992744 or special tool MB991824 and the personal computer.
4. Connect special tool MB992745 or special tool MB991910 to special tool MB992744 or special tool MB991824.
5. Connect special tool MB992745 or special tool MB991910 to the data link connector.
noteWhen the special tool MB992745 is connected to the data link connector, the special tool MB992744 indicator light will be illuminated in a green color.
6. Turn the power switch of special tool MB991824 to the "ON" position. <When using the special tool MB991824>
noteWhen special tool MB991824 is energized, special tool MB991824 indicator light will be illuminated in a green color.
7. Start the M.U.T.-IIISE system on the personal computer.
8. Select "OSS" on "System selection" screen.
9. On the next screen, select "Coding".
10. On the "Coding" screen, select "Chassis No./VIN Writing."

Following the instruction on the screen, press the OK button to execute the VIN writing. (M.U.T. screen above indicates when OSS-ECU is replaced.)

On the writing result confirmation screen, check that the VIN is written, and finish the registration.
13. Operate the electric motor switch to turn OFF the power supply.
noteAfter the scan tool (M.U.T-IIISE) has executed the VIN writing, it will turn the electric motor switch on forcibly. Therefore, after completion, turn the electric motor switch off.
14. Set the driver's door from open to close or from close to open.
15. Carrying the keyless operation key, perform the electric motor switch operation to turn the power from OFF to ON twice.
16. Check that the OSS-ECU diagnostic trouble code No. B1160 or U1166 is not set, and finish the registration.
 
 
HOW TO WRITE THE VIN TO THE SRS-ECU

  • Check that diagnostic trouble code No.B1496 "SRS-ECU non-volatile memory (EEPROM)", No.U1199 "VIN code not programmed" or No.U1195 "Coding not completed" is not set. When diagnostic trouble code No.B1496 "SRS-ECU non-volatile memory (EEPROM)", No.U1199 "Chassis No. not programmed" or No.U1195 "Coding not completed" is set, even if you attempt to write the VIN, it cannot be stored. If this diagnostic trouble code is set, perform troubleshooting and repair a defective component, and then write the VIN to the SRS-ECU.
  • While the scan tool (M.U.T.-IIISE) is communicating with the vehicle, the electric motor switch may not be turned off and no normally. Therefore, when you turn off the electric motor switch for that communication, wait for several seconds and then turn on it again (do not turn on it immediately).
Connect the scan tool (M.U.T.-IIISE) to the 16-pin data link connector as follows.

4. Connect special tool MB992745 or special tool MB991910 to special tool MB992744 or special tool MB991824.
5. Connect special tool MB992745 or special tool MB991910 to the data link connector.
noteWhen the special tool MB992745 is connected to the data link connector, the special tool MB992744 indicator light will be illuminated in a green color.
6. Turn the power switch of special tool MB991824 to the "ON" position. <When using the special tool MB991824>
noteWhen special tool MB991824 is energized, special tool MB991824 indicator light will be illuminated in a green color.
7. Start the M.U.T.-IIISE system on the personal computer.
8. Select "PHEV" on the next screen.
9. On the next screen, select "Coding".
10. On the "Coding menu" screen, select "Chassis No./VIN Writing."
11. Enter the VIN of registering vehicle and push the OK button.
12. "Chassis No./VIN Writing will be start. Are you sure? is displayed." Then press the OK button.
13. When "Completed" is displayed, press the OK button.

15. Select "Chassis number Information" on the "Coding" screen after the VIN writing is completed, and check that the VIN changed.

8. Select "ETACS" on the next screen.
9. On the next screen, select "Coding".
10. On the "Coding menu" screen, select "Chassis No./VIN Writing."
11. Enter the VIN of registering vehicle and push the OK button.
12. "Chassis No./VIN Writing will be start. Are you sure? is displayed." Then press the OK button.
13. When "Completed" is displayed, press the OK button.

  • While the scan tool (M.U.T.-IIISE) is communicating with the vehicle, the electric motor switch may not be turned off and no normally. Therefore, when you turn off the electric motor switch for that communication, wait for several seconds and then turn on it again (do not turn on it immediately).

noteWhen the special tool MB992745 is connected to the data link connector, the special tool MB992744 indicator light will be illuminated in a green color.
6. Turn the power switch of special tool MB991824 to the "ON" position. <When using the special tool MB991824>

7. Start the M.U.T.-IIISE system on the personal computer.
8. Select "PHEV" on the next screen.
9. On the next screen, select "Coding".
10. On the "Coding menu" screen, select "Chassis No./VIN Writing."
11. Enter the VIN of registering vehicle and push the OK button.
12. "Chassis No./VIN Writing will be start. Are you sure? is displayed." Then press the OK button.
13. When "Completed" is displayed, press the OK button.

  • Check that diagnostic trouble code No. P1045 "RMCU EEPROM fail" is not set. When diagnostic trouble code No. P1045 "RMCU EEPROM fail" is set, even if you attempt to write the VIN, it cannot be stored. Therefore, when this diagnostic trouble code is set, perform troubleshooting and repair a defective component, and then write the VIN to the REMCU.
  • While the scan tool (M.U.T.-IIISE) is communicating with the vehicle, the electric motor switch may not be turned off and no normally. Therefore, when you turn off the electric motor switch for that communication, wait for several seconds and then turn on it again (do not turn on it immediately).
Connect the scan tool (M.U.T.-IIISE) to the 16-pin data link connector as follows.

4. Connect special tool MB992745 or special tool MB991910 to special tool MB992744 or special tool MB991824.
5. Connect special tool MB992745 or special tool MB991910 to the data link connector.
noteWhen the special tool MB992745 is connected to the data link connector, the special tool MB992744 indicator light will be illuminated in a green color.
6. Turn the power switch of special tool MB991824 to the "ON" position. <When using the special tool MB991824>
noteWhen special tool MB991824 is energized, special tool MB991824 indicator light will be illuminated in a green color.
7. Start the M.U.T.-IIISE system on the personal computer.
8. Select "R-MCU" on "System selection" screen.
9. On the next screen, select "Coding".
10. On the "Coding" screen, select "Chassis No./VIN Writing."
11. Enter the VIN of registering vehicle and push the OK button.
12. "Chassis No./VIN Writing will be start. Are you sure? is displayed." Then press the OK button.
13. Returns to the previous screen and "In Progress" is displayed at the lower-left corner on the screen.
14. When "Completed" is displayed, press the OK button.

16. Select "Chassis number Information" on the "Coding" screen after the VIN writing is completed, and check that the VIN is changed.
