DTC P0616: Starter Relay Circuit Low Input
 
 
 
 
CIRCUIT OPERATION
  • Power for starter drive is supplied from the battery to the starter relay.
  • Battery voltage is supplied to the starter relay coil terminal from the ECM connector terminal STHI and is grounded to the ECM connector terminal STLO from the starter relay.
  • When the starter relay is turned ON, battery voltage is supplied to the starter from the starter relay.
 
 
TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION
The ECM turns ON the starter relay. This supplies battery voltage to the starter.
 
 
DTC SET CONDITIONS
Check Conditions
  • After 2 seconds have passed since the ignition switch was turned to "ON" position.
  • Battery positive voltage is more than 6.3 volts.
Judgment Criterion
  • Starter relay high or low voltage is less than 1 volt for 2 seconds.
 
 
FAIL-SAFE AND BACKUP FUNCTION
  • None.
 
 
TROUBLESHOOTING HINTS (The most likely causes for this code to be set are: )
  • Starter relay failed.
  • Shorted starter relay circuit, or connector damage.
  • ECM failed.
 
 
DIAGNOSIS
STEP 1. Check the starter relay.
(1) Remove the starter relay.
(2) Check for continuity between the starter relay coil terminals.
  • There should be continuity.
(3) Use jumper wires to connect starter relay terminal STHI line to the positive battery terminal and terminal STLO line to the negative battery terminal.
(4) Check for continuity between the starter relay switch terminals while connecting and disconnecting the jumper wire at the negative battery terminal.
  • Continuity (2 ohms or less). (Negative battery terminal connected)
  • Should be open loop. (Negative battery terminal disconnected)
(5) Install the starter relay.
Is the measured resistance normal?
Go to Step 2.
Replace the starter relay. Then go to Step 5.
 
STEP 2. Check of short to ground in STHI line between starter relay connector and ECM connector.
Is the harness wire in good condition?
Go to Step 3.
Repair the connector(s) or wiring harness. Then go to Step 5.
 
STEP 3. Check of short to ground in STLO line between starter relay connector and ECM connector.
Is the harness wire in good condition?
Go to Step 4.
Repair the connector(s) or wiring harness. Then go to Step 5.
 
STEP 4. Using scan tool (M.U.T.-IIISE), read the diagnostic trouble code (DTC).
cautionTo prevent damage to scan tool (M.U.T.-IIISE), always turn the ignition switch to the "LOCK" (OFF) position before connecting or disconnecting scan tool (M.U.T.-IIISE).
(1) Connect scan tool (M.U.T.-IIISE). Refer to HOW TO CONNECT THE SCAN TOOL (M.U.T.-IIISE) .
(2) Turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position.
(3) After the DTC has been deleted, read the DTC again.
(4) Turn the ignition switch to the "LOCK" (OFF) position.
Is the DTC P0616 set?
Replace the ECM (Refer to Removal and Installation ). Then go to Step 5.
It can be assumed that this malfunction is intermittent. Refer to GROUP 00, How to Use Troubleshooting/Inspection Service Points - How to Cope with Intermittent Malfunctions .
 
STEP 5. Using scan tool (M.U.T.-IIISE), read the diagnostic trouble code (DTC).
(1) Turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position.
(2) After the DTC has been deleted, read the DTC again.
(3) Turn the ignition switch to the "LOCK" (OFF) position.
Is the DTC P0616 set?
Retry the troubleshooting.
The inspection is complete.
