DTC C2253: EPB SW malfunction

OPERATION
  • When you pull up the electric parking brake switch with the brake pedal depressed, the parking brake will be applied.
  • When you turn ON the ignition switch, and press the electric parking brake switch with the brake pedal depressed, the parking brake will be released.

DTC SET CONDITIONS
The DTC will be set under any of the following conditions:
  • The ECU detects an open circuit or short to ground in the electric parking brake switch circuit.
  • Input signal from lock switch 1 does not correspond to that from lock switch 2.
  • Input signal from release switch 1 does not correspond to that from release switch 2.

TROUBLESHOOTING HINTS
  • Damaged wiring harness or connector
    • Open or short to ground in the wires between the electric parking brake ECU and the electric parking brake switch, or high resistance in a connector
    • Open in the wires between the electric parking brake switch and body ground, or high resistance in a connector
  • The electric parking brake switch seized or poor contact
  • Malfunction of the electric parking brake ECU

DIAGNOSIS
Required Special Tools:
  • MB992006: Extra Fine Probe
STEP 1. Using scan tool (M.U.T.-IIISE), check the data list.
(1)
cautionTo prevent damage to scan tool (M.U.T.-IIISE), always turn the ignition switch to the "LOCK" (OFF) position before connecting or disconnecting scan tool (M.U.T.-IIISE).
Connect scan tool (M.U.T.-IIISE). Refer to "How to Connect the Scan Tool (M.U.T.-IIISE) ."
(2) Check the following data list (Refer to ).
  • Item No.2: EPB switch: LOCK 1 SW
  • Item No.3: EPB switch: LOCK 2 SW
  • Item No.4: EPB switch: RELEASE 1 SW
  • Item No.5: EPB switch: RELEASE 2 SW
Is the check result normal?
The trouble can be an intermittent malfunction (Refer to GROUP 00 - How to Cope with Intermittent Malfunction ).
Go to Step 2.

STEP 2. Check the electric parking brake switch.
Refer to .
Is the check result normal?
Go to Step 3.
Replace the electric parking brake switch (Refer to ).

STEP 3. Check of short to ground, and open circuit in LCK1, LCK2, REL1 or REL2 line between electric parking brake ECU connector and electric parking brake switch connector
Is the check result normal?
Go to Step 4.
Repair the connector(s) or wiring harness.

STEP 4. Measure the resistance at the electric parking brake switch connector.
(1) Check the electric parking brake switch connector.
(2) Disconnect the connector and measure at the wiring harness side.
(3) Measure the resistance between terminal No.1 and body ground.
OK: Continuity exists (2 ohms or less).
Is the check result normal?
Go to Step 5.
The ground circuit may be open. Repair the wiring harness wires or connectors between the electric parking brake switch connector and the body ground.

STEP 5. Using scan tool (M.U.T.-IIISE), check whether the DTC is set again.
Check again if the DTC is set.
(1) Erase the DTC.
(2) Turn the ignition switch to the LOCK (OFF) position.
(3) Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
(4) Check the DTC.
Is the DTC C2253 set?
Replace the electric parking brake ECU (Refer to ).
The trouble can be an intermittent malfunction (Refer to GROUP 00 - How to Cope with Intermittent Malfunction ).
