DTC U1108: Meter CAN timeout/ Not equipped

caution
  • If there is any problem in the CAN bus lines, an incorrect diagnostic trouble code (DTC) may be set. Prior to this diagnosis, diagnose the CAN bus lines (Refer to GROUP 54C - CAN Bus Diagnostics Table ).
  • Whenever ECU is replaced, ensure that the CAN bus lines are normal.

OPERATION
  • The signals from the combination meter are sent to the EPS-ECU.

DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE SET CONDITION
EPS-ECU receives the odometer data (wheel speed sensor data) from the combination meter via CAN bus lines. If the EPS-ECU cannot receive the odometer data, DTC U1108 will be set.

COMMENT ON TROUBLE SYMPTOM
Current trouble
  • The wiring harness or connector in the CAN bus lines between the EPS-ECU and combination meter, the power supply system of the combination meter, or the EPS-ECU itself may be defective.
Past trouble
  • If DTC U1108 is set as a historic trouble, carry out the diagnosis with particular emphasis on the wiring harness and connector in the CAN bus lines between the EPS-ECU and combination meter as well as on the power supply system of the combination meter. For diagnosis procedures, refer to "How to treat past trouble" (Refer to GROUP 00 - How to Use Troubleshooting/Inspection Service Points, How to Treat Past Trouble ).
noteIn case of a historic trouble, the scan tool (M.U.T.-III) CAN bus diagnosis cannot find the problem even when there is an abnormality in the CAN bus. In this case, be sure to diagnose the CAN bus lines in the same manner as for "How to Cope with Intermittent Malfunction" (refer to GROUP 00 - How to Use Troubleshooting/Inspection Service Points, How to Cope with Intermittent Malfunctions ). You can narrow down the possible cause of the trouble by referring to the diagnostic trouble code, which is set regarding the CAN communication-linked ECUs (refer to GROUP 54C - Explanation About the Using SCAN Tool (M.U.T.-III), diagnose the CAN bus lines. ).

PROBABLE CAUSES
  • Defective harness wire(s) or connector(s)
  • Malfunction of the combination meter
  • Malfunction of the EPS-ECU

DIAGNOSIS
STEP 1. Using scan tool (M.U.T.-III) CAN bus diagnosis
Use the scan tool (M.U.T.-III) to diagnose the CAN bus lines.
Is the check result normal?
Go to Step 2.
Repair the CAN bus lines (Refer to GROUP 54C - CAN Bus Diagnostics Table ). After repairing the CAN bus lines, go to Step 2.

STEP 2. Use scan tool (M.U.T.-III) to confirm a diagnostic trouble code of other systems.
Check if a combination meter-related diagnostic trouble code is set.
Is the diagnostic trouble code set?
Perform the troubleshooting for the combination meter (Refer to GROUP 54A - Troubleshooting ).
Go to Step 3.

STEP 3. Check whether the diagnostic trouble code is set again.
(1) Erase the diagnostic trouble code.
(2) Turn the ignition switch from the "LOCK" (OFF) position to the "ON" position.
(3) Check if the diagnostic trouble code is set.
Is DTC U1108 set?
Replace the EPS-ECU (Refer to ), and then go to Step 4.
Go to Step 4.

STEP 4.
Return to Step 1.
The diagnosis is complete.
