Precaution for Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) "AIR BAG" and "SEAT BELT PRE-TENSIONER"
The Supplemental Restraint System such as “AIR BAG” and “SEAT BELT PRE-TENSIONER”, used along with a front seat belt, helps to reduce the risk or severity of injury to the driver and front passenger for certain types of collision.
Information necessary to service the system safely is included in the “SRS AIR BAG” and “SEAT BELT” of this Service Manual.

warningAlways observe the following items for preventing accidental activation.
  • To avoid rendering the SRS inoperative, which could increase the risk of personal injury or death in the event of a collision that would result in air bag inflation, it is recommended that all maintenance and repair be performed by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer.
  • Before servicing, electric motor switch OFF, disconnect 12V battery negative terminal and wait for 3 minutes or more (discharges electricity held in the additional power supply circuit of the air bag diagnosis sensor unit).
  • Battery posts, terminals and related accessories contain lead and lead compounds. WASH HANDS AFTER HANDLING.
  • Certain components of this vehicle, such as air bag modules and seat belt pre-tensioners, may contain perchlorate materials. Before deployment and/or disposal of these components, review and comply with applicable Federal, state and local regulations.
  • Always work from the side of air bag module. Never work in front of it.
  • Never use air tools or electric tools for servicing (prevents the air bag diagnosis sensor unit from activating unexpectedly due to vibration).
  • Never attempt to disassemble or repair the air bag module, air bag diagnosis sensor unit, sensors and seat belt pre-tensioner. If faulty, replace it with new one(s).
  • Never use electrical test equipment on any circuit related to the SRS unless instructed to in this Service Manual. SRS wiring harnesses can be identified by yellow and/or orange harnesses or harness connectors.
  • The removed air bag modules should be stored in a clean, dry place with the deployment surface facing up.
  • To prevent the accidental explosion, never place the air bag module and seat belt pre-tensioner in the following temperature.
    • Air bag modules: 90°C (194°F) or more
    • Seat belt pre-tensioner: 80°C (176°F) or more
  • Replace air bag diagnosis sensor unit, air bag module and seat belt pre-tensioner if it is dropped or sustains an impact.
  • To prevent damage to the parts, never allow oil, grease, detergent, or water to come in contact with the air bag module and seat belt pre-tensioner.
  • Improper repair, including incorrect removal and installation of the SRS, can lead to personal injury caused by unintentional activation of the system. For removal of Spiral Cable, Air Bag Module and Seat Belt Pre-tensioner see "SRS AIR BAG" and "SEAT BELT".
